Here is a little interview with our lovely stockist in Amsterdam- Charlie+Mary..

How would you describe your shop?

Our shop is the place where you can find the most beautiful sustainable and fairtrade men and women fashion. Besides fashion you can find shoes, vintage accessories and tableware, books and art. In the back of shop there is a cozy lunchroom, coffee place called Beter & Leuk. The combination of all these products, the good atmosphere and cafe makes you feel like home!

Why inspired you to start an ethically minded store?

After studying fashion and during our work in the fashion industry we got more and more to know about production processes and the effect of the fashion industry on people an the environment.

Besides this we noticed there was still a certain mindset about sustainable fashion and all of this together made us deciding to start the store. This way we could select all the best sustainable brands, give them a platform and help to change the mindset of people.

Describe a typical lazy Sunday..

A typical lazy sunday is sleep in, jogging along the riverside,  having a good breakfast hanging around in your comfy clothes and later get in to town, visit an event or little festival and having drinks with friends.

Lastly, what ALAS piece will you be sleeping in this Summer?!

This summer I will be wearing the pomegranate Jumpsuit, over my bikini when going to the beach and during a sunny day on the boat on the Amsterdam canals.

The new S/S 2012 lookbook from Diaz has been released this week… OH BOY! What a beauty. We love the tutti-frutti vibe, the mental colour combos and the inclusion of organic cotton and silk in the mix. Can’t wait for summer!!!

What a beauty! In an ode to how awesome mothers are, I dug up some pictures of my mum when she was around my age..Back in the seventies, while many women were stuck in the kitchen my mum was doing courageous things!

She caught crocodiles in Arnhem land (counting them as they were becoming endangered) and fought bush fires all over Australia (and to this day still does!) All the while still looking ever so stylish! Although doing some pretty hard jobs, she was known for wearing purple head to toe, big perms and I am pretty sure she was a serious fan of Jenny Kee. She will and always will be my inspiration!

Spent Saturday wandering around the Bronte and Bondi Garage Sale Trail and feel pretty stoked with my purchases… I took $40 with me and came back with:

-two amazing vintage printed dresses

-one pink polka dot top

-an almost-new pair of black converses

-a cookbook with super nice seasonal recipes that look delicious

-a minolta lens for my film camera

-some  pretty ‘australian plants’ magazines

PLUS my boyfriend bought not one but TWO surfboards for $20 and $5… insane!

A pretty decent haul, wouldn’t you agree? I think the event is an amazing idea, thousands of garage sales all around australia all happening at once… a great way to promote recycling too! Can’t wait til next year!

These bags are handmade from recycled materials in Kenya by marginalised communities of women, for Vivienne Westwood’s Ethical Fashion Africa collection. Westwood has partnered with the International Trade Centre’s Ethical Fashion Program of the United Nations once again, to provide jobs and income to rural African villages.

Nice one, Viv!
